Early in my MDG career I treated master data as a data problem.
It's really a people problem with a data symptom.
Data owners who aren't named, stewards without time, and approvals nobody trusts will break any perfectly configured system. The best MDG solutions I've seen had an operating model before they had a workflow.
If you're planning MDG, start with who owns the data, and then build.
